Abstract

In Jacques the Fatalist, Diderot uses the shape of the story told to the others by an always present narrator. This one speaks with the reader, livens the story by his laughter and his irony, reveals the arbitrary power of an intrigue, associates him with the decision on certain details, convinces him of his creative omnipotence, interests him rather in the creation than in the anecdote. The storyteller inside the narrative authenticates the events from the story and presents them as a witness or as a character.
