Phraseologismen beim Sprachenlernen als Schlüssel zur Kultur und Kommunikation

Abstract

Phraseological units are more than fixed linguistic expressions: they are cultural markers that reflect values, beliefs, and ways of thinking within a language community. This article examines the role of phraseological units in foreign language learning, with a particular focus on multicultural groups where learners bring diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to the classroom. By connecting language learning to real-life communication and cultural discovery, phraseological units have the potential to significantly increase learner motivation. They offer a playful and meaningful way to engage with the target language, turning abstract vocabulary into memorable and emotionally relevant expressions. After outlining key theoretical concepts such as equivalence levels and pragmatic functions, the article presents a set of practical activities for teaching German as a foreign language (DaF). These activities encourage learners to compare expressions across languages, reflect on cultural differences, and actively use phraseological units in authentic communicative situations. The findings highlight how this approach fosters lexical enrichment, deeper intercultural understanding, and a lasting motivation to learn.
