Abstract

This study sheds light on translating the discourse on the quest for identity in the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The study stemmed from the observation that the translation of identity-related discourse is a complex process which requires not only a profound understanding of linguistic challenges but also the emotional and cultural deepness that characterises this type of discourse. To fulfil this, we set two objectives: identify the linguistic modalities in the discourse on the quest for identity in the corpus and determine the translation strategies used by Perrin and justify their use. To achieve this, Critical Discourse Analysis was used to analyse data following Fairclough's approach (1995) as well as the textual analysis model proposed by Wallmach & Kruger (1997). The analysis grid was adopted from the model proposed by Losenje (2022). The identified extracts were grouped around five linguistic modalities and the results revealed that the main strategy used is domestication with 70% rather than foreignization with 10%.
