The Need of Hemingway

Having a strong influence on the 20th C fiction, Ernest Hemingway's works are considered classics of American literature. The author of this paper argues that Hemingway offers in his works three responses to the world he lives in. The first one is to be defined and maintained by each individual and it targets the obligation of a moral attitude in life. The second one indicates the necessity of endeavouring oneself to achieve order and discipline in the world around, in order to find meaning in life. The third one advocates that only union with nature offers true – although short – moments of happiness.
