The Suicidal Post-Cartesian Body
Résumé (en anglais)
My paper focuses on Lawrence Durrell's The Alexandria Quartet and analyses the circumstances in which suicide is committed or thought of most seriously by the character and the bodily changes the character endures and states of mind he has once he has decided to commit it. Durrell seems to have a knack for such disturbed characters who one way or the other, i.e. by striving for life or for death, succeed in leaving behind a faltering bodily status and depressing mental state. The two characters used as examples for this theme mirror two types of depression – masked (Pursewarden) and obvious depression (Balthazar).
