Abstract

Côte d'Ivoire, a former French colony, also stands out in Africa for its strong Spanish-speaking community of learners and teachers. Interest in the language of Cervantes is present and growing in the country, making it the subject of numerous studies. This article examines the motivations and expectations of learners of Spanish as a foreign language in Côte d'Ivoire: why and for what purpose are so many people learning Spanish in the country? The answer to this main question hinges on three major arguments: the early institutionalization of Spanish language teaching, its gradual enculturation into a new socio-cultural context, and the major contribution of the globalization process.
